Planet Downs Private Runway, Queensland
Projects: Engineering - Planning & Design | Construction | Operations WSO/ARO
PROJECT SUMMARY
ACG Australia was engaged to deliver the strengthening and upgrade of the Planet Downs Aerodrome runway and taxiway infrastructure, together with the installation of a new solar-powered airfield ground lighting (AGL) system.
Located approximately two hours south of Emerald, Queensland, Planet Downs is a remote aerodrome that supports regional aviation operations and provides critical access to the surrounding area. The project involved the construction and strengthening of a 1,200m runway, pavement upgrades, drainage improvements, and the implementation of modern solar airfield lighting to enhance operational safety, reliability, and all-weather accessibility.
Through careful planning, remote-area logistics management, and efficient construction staging, ACG delivered a durable airfield solution designed to meet current operational requirements while supporting future growth.
Project Capital Cost: $4m

PROJECT CHALLENGES AND OUTCOMES
The Planet Downs Aerodrome project was undertaken in a remote Queensland location, presenting significant logistical and operational challenges associated with material supply, workforce mobilisation, weather conditions and construction sequencing.
ACG developed a comprehensive construction and delivery strategy to minimise programme risks while maintaining strict safety, quality and environmental standards. Particular attention was given to pavement design and construction methodologies to ensure long-term durability under operational loading conditions.
The installation of a solar-powered airfield lighting system eliminated the need for extensive electrical reticulation infrastructure, providing a cost-effective and sustainable solution suitable for the remote operating environment. The inclusion of a Pilot Activated Aerodrome Lighting Control (PAALC) system further enhanced after-hours accessibility and operational flexibility.
