East Kimberley Regional Airport, Western Australia, Australia

Following the successful delivery of Stage 1, ACG Australia was engaged to deliver Stage 2 of the East Kimberley Regional Airport Infrastructure Upgrade, a major expansion project designed to increase airport capacity and support larger commercial aircraft operations.

The project included extending the existing runway from 1,829m to 2,370m, enabling Code 4C aircraft operations and accommodating Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320-200 aircraft. Works also included upgrades to airfield lighting, drainage infrastructure, pavement markings, perimeter fencing and associated airside infrastructure.

The project was delivered within a live regional airport environment, requiring detailed staging, stakeholder coordination and aviation safety management to minimise operational disruption.

The remote location of Kununurra presented significant logistical challenges, including material procurement, workforce mobilisation and construction sequencing. Through careful planning and integrated project management, ACG successfully delivered the works while maintaining safety, quality and programme objectives.

The completed project significantly enhanced the airport’s operational capability, supporting larger commercial aircraft operations, improving airside safety and increasing long-term capacity for future passenger growth and regional connectivity.

As a result, East Kimberley Regional Airport is better positioned to accommodate future passenger growth, increase airline servicing opportunities and strengthen the region’s connections to key domestic destinations.
