Mongolia Peer Review

Client: Rio Tinto/Oyu Tolgoi

International design consultant for a new airport (B737-800 capable) in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia to support fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) mining activities. This region is one of the harshest environments in the world.

The project incorporated:

  • Airfield layout and OLS
  • Runway
  • Taxiway and apron
  • Control tower
  • Rescue fire facility and vehicles
  • Passenger terminal building and hangar
  • Navigation aids
  • Airfield lighting

We also assisted Oyu Tolgoi and Fluor to develop the concrete mix specification, to take account of the available quarry materials, and the approach to be used in construction activities to minimise the construction programme without reducing the high quality of the airfield pavements.

This project demonstrated our ability to work alongside local aviation consultants and bring world class capability to the design.
